Addressing the Vaping Epidemic

Breakout Description:

This session will help Health Educators develop or update their educational materials with the most recent information on the subject of e-cigarettes/vaping/and Juul.  Many youth are being falsely persuaded by numerous myths related to these products—like “it is just water vapor!” This session will provide educators with the information to counter those myths and to increase the students’ understanding of the risks of using vaping products, especially those products’ effect on the developing brain. Participants will receive specific resources that will not only help them address the vaping epidemic among youth but also help them meet the new core standards.  Access to other handouts will be provided to assist teachers with certain areas of the core.  Suggestions will be given regarding protecting the fidelity of the Botvins Lifeskills Training curricula while yet still adding the necessary information needed for students to make healthy lifestyle decisions.

Presenter:

Marcia Peterson

Marcia graduated from the University of Utah with degrees in Health, Physical Education, and Dance.  She taught those subjects in Salt Lake City School District and served as a sponsor for many school clubs and student government activities.  Marcia coordinated the district’s K-12 Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Education Program for 10 years.  She took a leave of absence from the district to assist the Utah Board of Education with the implementation of the CDC’s HIV/AIDS Education Program.  However she missed working closely with youth and requested that she be placed back into the classroom where she taught for 11 years before retiring.

Marcia currently serves as the school-based coordinator with Salt Lake County Health Department’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program.  She also facilitated the student intervention Ending Nicotine Dependence Program (END) for youth caught using tobacco/vaping products.

She is married, has three children, and seven grandchildren who jokingly call her the “World’s Oldest Living University of Utah Cheerleader.”  (NOT true—there are one or two still living who are older and still alive!)  She is an avid sports fan.  Go UTES!
